The Aurora Borealis. So strange how now, even with so little learning from books, some things kept proper names in the languages of the long dead men.
They danced in hues of blues and incandescent oranges, flying overhead like bombers en route to something fatal and fantastic. He never knew where the lights wanted to go, but he was sure that he wanted to follow, as far as they could take him.
The lights on the wallpaper kept him awake at night, then lulled him into a deep sleep. It was as though his aunt’s stories, his aunt herself, were reaching out from beyond the grave.
(This is urgent), they seemed to say. (It’s all happening now, and you must be present. You must be free.)
Father said the shifts in the wallpaper were nothing more than a trick of the light. But he could tell, just from looking at the hollow look from his mother’s eyes, that there was no artifice here.
It didn’t matter how the hallway spoke to him. All that mattered is that it had a voice, and it always spoke with great urgency.
(Run!) it would scream to him in the middle of the night. (Go now. Love your family, but know that you must leave. And if you are lucky, very lucky indeed, you will find your way back home to them.)
He faltered. He paused. He resolved.
He left, tears streaking dark marks on his hidden face.
