It isn’t fair of me to ask that. God knows where I am now is not your home. It’s barely my own. But if you were here, I think my work would be going better.
I work. I don’t even get blocked, like I sometimes do in the city. I make progress, every day. But I can’t help but wish that you were here, think that you could push me forward at a faster pace. If I could finish this work faster, I wouldn’t mind the interruption of you. I never did mind your interruptions, truly.
Anna. You are so far away, and yet you are so near. I hear your voice constantly, as my own inner critic. I can’t even look at my own work anymore, not clearly, not without hearing your imagined opinions foisted upon me.
I treasure them, these imagined words of yours, since I am unlikely to hear your own true voice for many months.
Yours, always,
Matthew
