The impressions gathered, they all knew he was tearing away. Bit by bit, he was unlatching the door, ready to escape. To understand all that he needed to learn, to experience, he must leave…
He ran, he ran as far as he could until he no longer heard the voices, the laughter or the yelling. He was in search of freedom, an independence that hadn’t before been taught. One only understood through stories, and in fictitious picture-shows. Before him awaited a decision, a path, a highway.
From beyond the telephone wires that scattered the inlays of the streets, he pressed the gas - It was an old 1970 Ford Maverick. His father had given it to him for his 16th birthday. With all his will, all his purity, he placed his fears aside and chose instead to adorn a brave sense of naivety.
Like the Ghost of Tom Joad, his little beast took off, screaming down the freeway -- The wind undulated a smell of a gasoline and of enthrallment. He was driving for love, for insanity, for everything he couldn’t feel in the confines of home.
Riding passenger seat he carried a suitcase full of doubt. The vinyl seats were tinted a musky yellow --
The presence of a memory; he couldn’t leave it behind… miles and miles of careless escapism, and he couldn’t, simply, forget.
